Mr. Stuart Sutton
I am in my third year as Counselor at Highland and I love the students, staff and administration in Tulia! I have been in education for MANY years and have been a teacher, coach, counselor and administrator. My wife and I have 5 children and 6 grandchildren who are spread out in Nebraska, Kansas and Texas. Oh and we also have two Yorkies who “run the show” at our house.
My job as an elementary counselor includes a variety of guidance and counseling services for children. My goal is to compliment the learning environment in the classroom by using a child-centered developmental approach. This is done individually, in small groups, in classroom guidance settings, and in conferences with parents and teachers.
At Highland we teach character around six pillars and Kelso’s Choice. These pillars are Responsibility, Trustworthy, Citizenship,Respect, Fairness, and Caring. We have defined character to be what a person is on the inside. Our character is revealed by how we act when we think no one is looking. Kelso’s Choice is a nationally recognized program which effectively teaches children peace-making skills. It is a proven resource that increases self-confidence, reduces tattling and is a preliminary tool to prevent bullying.
Classroom Guidance is an integrative way to reach the highest number of students. The classes come to the Guidance Room to participate in lessons on a variety of topics including: dealing with teasing, character education, friendship skills, problem solving, self-esteem, and anger-management.
I am also available to provide short-term one-on-one counseling for students experiencing emotional difficulties that interfere with their success in school.
As well, I have responsibilities at Highland with the Section 504 determination process, the dyslexia determination process and testing, documenting and monitoring the English Language Learner program.
