Michael Hughes was born at Clinton Sherman Air Force Base and raised in Ardmore, Oklahoma, where he won the state doubles title, and advanced to the finals of the International Science and Engineering Fair. He was also accomplished in vocal performance. After high school, he attended Baylor University, majoring in English and journalism, with a concentration in Earth Sciences. He was active in the Sigma Chi Fraternity, Sigma Delta Chi Journalism Society and served as photo editor on the staff of the Baylor University Lariat. Following college, he worked for Morris News Service and the Amarillo Globe-News, where he was named employee of the year. He also won A-Plus Service honors at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center - Amarillo as Director of News and Publications. Before joining the Tulia High School faculty, he taught and coached at Boys Ranch, Caprock and Bushland high schools. In addition to English, journalism and tennis, he has taught forensics, theater arts, communications, yearbook and newspaper. He is the father of Aaron, Seth and Audrey Hughes as well as an avid fan of their exploits in academics, track, basketball and music. During the summer he has written for the Amarillo Globe News and served as an interpretation ranger at Palo Duro Canyon State Park. His hobbies include Aikido, motorcycling, mountain biking, hiking, swimming, hang gliding, soaring, skydiving, reading, movies and hanging out with his dog, Charlie.
